Harriet was born a slave, so she began to work at the early age of 5, taking care of other children. She was not able to go to school or attend college, but even without knowing how to read or write she became a nurse. She got married at 25 years old to John Tubman, making herself Harriet Tubman.

Will you marry me.

A few years later, Harriet and some of her brothers planned their escape. During the escape, the brothers decided to change their minds and go back, but Harriet kept going.

In Pennsylvania Harriet finally became a free woman, and was determined to help others escape too.

Harriet became a conductor in the Underground Railroad. She would escort slaves from the south and take them to Canada, where they were free.
