Taylor Markham was abandoned by her 

mother at a gas station on a road called 

Jellicoe Road. "I don't know where I fit in. One 

day when I was eleven, my mother drove me 

out here, and while I was in the bathroom at 

the 7-Eleven on the Jellicoe Road, she drove 

off and left me there" (Marchetta 20).

A few minutes later Hannah had showed up at 

the 7-Eleven on the Jellicoe Road, found Taylor 

and had taken her in since her mom 

abandoned her. "Over the years I've come to 

accept that Hannah driving by on the Jellicoe 

Road 5 minutes after my mother dumped me 

was no coincidence" (Marchetta 22).

Hannah had left Taylor at the house for a few 

days. Taylor didn't like to be left alone, since 

her mother abandoned her. "It's in my dreams, 

it's inside my heart and without Hannah here, 

it's an all consuming feeling of doom" 

(Marchetta 30).

Taylor had thought that Hannah was there for 

her until she left her. "Instinct tells me to go to 

Hannah's, but she doesn't live there anymore 

and that's when I realise the major difference 

between my mother and Hannah. My mother 

deserted me at the 7-Eleven hundred of 

kilometers away from home. Hannah, however, 

did the unforgivable, she deserted me in our 

own backyard" (Marchetta 145). Taylor had 

thought that Hannah would always be there for 

her, but that was until Hannah had left her.
