Many of the children in Somalia are from very poor families
and have to work to pay for their family and/or their
education, of the 250 million children worldwide, it is
estimated that 32% work in Africa. Over 70% of the region
lives and works in extremely poor conditions.
Africa is the poorest continent, and often considered the
most affected by child labor. In Somalia it is estimated that
up to half of children aged 5-14 are working.

Not only Somalia men are being used harsh-fully.
Somalia women are also being treated awfully
and are getting abused. Women are being sold
and used for services. Women in Somalia became
prostitute and had no further rights. Girls are
also recruited to transport weapons and provide
intelligence and logistical support.

Somalia continued to lack nearly all elements
necessary to address the worst forms of child
labor, including a solid legal framework, law
enforcement, policies, and programs. Children
continue to engage in the worst forms of child
labor, many of them in dangerous activities in
agriculture and some as child soldiers
child soldiers in Somalia.
Boys as young as age 8 are bribed or forcibly
taken from their homes, schools, and the
streets to serve as soldiers.

CHILD MARRIAGE IN SOMALIA
Between 2000 and 2009, 45% of young women
admitted to being married before the age of 18.
Arranged marriages, often unknown to the future
couple, are very common. Some girls run away from
their families to escape this situation, which is highly
disapproved of in Somali society.
