The Age of Exploration (also called the age of discovery) began in the 1400s and continued through the 1600s. It was a period of time when the European nations began exploring the world.

Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian merchant, explorer, and navigator from the Republic of Florence. Between 1497 and 1504, Vespucci participated in at least two voyages of the Age of Discovery. The first one on behalf of Spain from 199-1500 and then for Portugal from 1501-1502.



is for Bartolomeu Dias
Bartolomeu Dias was a Portuguese mariner and explorer. His discoveries effectively established the sea route between Europe and Asia. He was born 1450 and died May 29,1500. In May 1500, Dias was caught in a terrible storm off the Cape of Good Hope. He died when his ship sank, along with three other vessels. Bartolomeu never made it to India.



is for Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was said to be born between August 25th to October 31, 1451. He died May 20, 1506. He was an Italian explorer and navigator who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean sponsored by the catholic Monarchs of Spain. His expeditions were the first known European contact with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.



is for Diogo Cao

Diogo Cao was a Portuguese explorer and one of the most notable navigators of the age of discovery. He made two voyages sailing along the west coast of Africa in the 1480s, exploring the costa River and the coasts of the present-day Angola and Namibia


is for Elcano, Juan Sebastian

Juan Sebastian Elcano was a spanish navigator, ship-owner and explorer of basque origin from Getaria, part of the Crown of Castile when he was born, best known for having completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in the ship Victoria on the Magellan expedition to the Spice Islands.


is for Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand de Magallanes was a Portuguese explorer. He is best known for having planned and led the 1519 Spanish expedition to the East Indies across the Pacific Ocean to open a Maritime trade route. During this voyage, Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan in 1521 in the present-day Philippines.


is for Gaspar Corte-Real

Gaspar Corte-Real was a Portuguese explorer who participated in various exploratory voyages sponsored by the Portuguese Crown. The voyages are said to have been some of the first to reach Newfoundland and possibly other parts of eastern Canada. Gaspar was born into the noble Corte-Real family on Terceira in the Azores islands. He is the youngest of three sons of Portuguese explorer Joao Vaz Corte-Real.

Hernan Cortes was a spanish conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of what is now mainland Mexico under the rue of the King of Castile in the early 16th century. Hernan Cortes was a part of the generation of spanish explorers and conquistadors who began the first phase of the Spanish Colonization of the Americas.


is for Isabella I of Castile

Isabella I was Queen of Castile from 1474 until her death in 1504. After a struggle to claim the throne. Isabella reorganized the governmental system, brought the crime rate to the lowest it has been in years, and unburdened the kingdom of the enormous debt her half-brother King Henry IV had left behind. Isabella marriage to Ferdinand in 1469 created the basis of the de facto unification of Spain.


is for Juan Ponce de leon

Juan Ponce de leon was a spanish explorer and conquistador known for leading the first official European expedition to florida and for serving as the first governor of Puerto Rico. He was of noble birth and served in the Spanish military from a young age. He came to the Americas as a "gentleman volunteer" with Christopher Columbus second expedition in 1493.


is for Kelsey, Henry

Henry Kelsey was an English fur trader, explorer, and sailor who played an important role in establishing the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada. He is the first recorded European to have visited the present-day provinces of Saskatchewan and possibly, Alberta, as well as the first to have explored the great Plains from the north.


is for Luis Vaz de Camoes

Luis Vaz de Camoes is considered Portugal's and the Portuguese language's greatest poet. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Milton, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and drama but is best remember of his epic work Os Lusiadas.

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant, explorer and writer who traveled though Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. Born in Venice, Marco learned the mercantile trade from his father and his uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, who travelled through Asia and met Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time.


is for Niccolò de' Conti

Niccolò de' Conti was an Italian Merchant, explorer, and writer. Born in Chioggia, he traveled to India and Southeast Asia, and possibly to Southern China, during the early 15th century, He was one of the sources used to create the 1450 Fra Mauro Map, which indicated that there was a sea route from Europe around Africa to India.


is for Ojeda, Alonso de

Alonso de Ojeda was a spanish explorer, governor and conquistador. He travelled through modern-day Guyana, Venezuela, Trinidad, Tobago, Curacao, Aruba and Colombia. He navigated with Amerigo Vespucci who is famous for having named Venezuela, which he explored during his first two expeditions, for having been the first European to vist Guyana, Curacao.


is for Pedro Alvares Cabral

Pedro Alvares Cabral was a Portuguese nobleman, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the European discoverer of Brazil. He was the first human in history to ever be in 4 continents, uniting all of them in his first voyage of 1500.
