on the prevention, treatment, and infection of Conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis,
commonly known as Pinkeye, is an inflammation of the clear membrane
which covers the white of the eye and inner eyelid. Common signs and symptoms
of Pinkeye includes the white of the eye and inner eyelid becoming pink in color,
eye discomfort such as itchiness and discharge from the eye that may cause the
eye lid to stick together. Pinkeye can be caused by bacteria, allergens, and
environmental substances such as chemicals and air pollutants. The contagious
form of pink eye is caused by bacteria. The bacteria that causes this infection is also
responsible for other colds and infections such as sore throats, inner ear infections and
sinus infections. Pinkeye can be transferred from person to person by touching
something that an infected person has touched like a tissue, or directly touching
the infected person such as holding hands with an infected person who had rubbed
their eye.

One day Betty was at school having lots of fun. She was
learning many new things and playing with her best friend
Brian.
Brian started to rub his eye. Then Betty asked "Brian are
you crying? Your eye is pink!" Brian answered, "No Betty,
I'm not crying. My eye is itchy and there is gooey stuff
coming out."
Brian and Betty continued to play with toys together until
it was time to go home.

When Betty woke up the next morning, her eye
was pink, itchy and gooey stuff was coming out.
Betty called for her mom, "Mom! Mom! Oh No! My
eye is pink, just like Brian's eye!"
Betty's Mom then said, "I will take you to the
Doctor to see what is wrong."

"Hello Betty, How are you feeling today?" says the
Doctor."Not very good," says Betty. "My eye is pink,
itchy, and gooey stuff is coming out and making my
eye stuck together, just like Brian!"
"Well Betty, it looks like you have Conjunctivitis,"
says the Doctor. "Conjuncti-what ?!?" says
Betty."Conjunctivitis (say: kon-junk-tih-VY-tis), or
you can call it Pinkeye. This is when germs called
bacteria (say: bak-TEER-ee-uh) get into your eye
and cause an infection (say: in-FEK-shun). That is
why your eye is pink, itchy and gooey stuff is
coming out" says the doctor.

"Germs like to live on your hands and toys. When you
and Brian were playing with toys, the germs from his
eye were on his hands. When Brian touched the toys his
germs got onto the toys you were playing with too. The
best way to stop germs from getting you sick or getting on
toys is to wash your hands" says the Doctor.
"How long does it take to wash the germs off my
hands?" says Betty. "You can sing the Happy Birthday
song two times to help you. After you finish singing the
Happy Birthday song twice when washing your hands, you
know you are done washing the germs off your hands,"
says the Doctor.
