150 years ago Christopher Sholes, who was American, created the first typewriter. This is the story of one of the most practical inventions of the 19th century. The typewriter is a 19th century invention that revolutionized the business world. Its creator was a man of great wit.

He also devised a banknote counting machine and the development of this device would result in the typewriter, which he put into practice with the help of the printer Samuel W. Soule, the amateur mechanic Carlos S. Glidden and the financial contribution of James Densmore

Sholes patented his creation in 1868 and five years later, he sold the patent for $12,000 to the Remington arms company, which was trying to diversify its lines of business.
Some time before there were already attempts to build a machine that made writing easier, one of the most famous models is that of the British Henry Mill, who in 1714 created one with which he wrote a treatise, although some books give little merit. to this volume and cite as the oldest typescript one made in 1808 by the Italian countess Carolina Fantoni on an artifact created by her friend Pelligrino Turri.

The first model of which copies could be made was the one developed by Sholes. He took advantage of the ink ribbon devised by a Scotsman a few years earlier, and his great contribution was the mechanism that transfers the stroke to the type to be printed.
He made 25,000 units of this first model, but only sold 1,200. There was not enough demand, and the machine was unwieldy and somewhat expensive at $125. In 1888 to popularize it, the Remington house organized typing speed contests, which helped the media to become interested in the tests, thus the company gained effective and free publicity. By 1900 there were already more than 100,000 typewriters in use.
The introduction of the electric machine was also an important step into the future. The oldest known is from 1873, an invention of Thomas Alva Edison that was never sold. The later models were widely used by press agency teleprinters at the end of the last century. In 1961, IBM achieved a minor revolution by replacing type rods with a revolving sphere, with embedded characters, that moved over the surface of the paper.
Three years later, the same company created a machine with memory, which allowed errors to be corrected and copies to be made. In 1959, an important jury chose that year the Lettera 22 typewriter, from the Italian brand Olivetti, as the "best design product of the last 100 years".
