Both the canonical Gospels of Luke and Matthew describe Jesus as being born in Bethlehem, Judea of a virgin mother. In the account in Luke's Gospel, Joseph and Mary travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the census, and Jesus is born there and placed in a manger. Angels appear and declare that Jesus is a savior of all mankind and shepherds come to worship him. In Matthew's account, the Magi follow a star to Bethlehem to bring gifts to Jesus, born as the king of the Jews. King Herod orders the slaughter of all boys in Bethlehem under the age of two, but Jesus' family flees to Egypt and later resettles in Nazareth.
