The Soviet Union decided to compete with The 

Untied States by announcing that they would 

launch a satellite "in the near future" after 

hearing about the United States preparation in 

launching artificial satellites. 

The Soviet Union launched the SPUTNIK 1 on 

October 4, 1957 putting them with the lead in 

the space race. However, twelve years later on 

July 20, 1969, the United States launched 

APOLLO 11.

Many people wonder who the first people in 

space actually were? Was it the Soviet Union? 

The United States? On April 12, 1961, the 

Soviet Union launched Yuri Gagarin into space. 

Then three weeks later, The United States put 

Alan Shephard into space. Shephard, however,  

was the first to have control over his 

spacecraft.
