Once upon a time, a long, long, time ago, Shammy the leprechaun went to visit his two human friends, Pila and Dimo. The kids were in their house pretending to be volcanologists.
“Hi kids!” Shammy said. “What are you doing?”
“Hi Shammy!” The kids greeted him. “We are pretending to be volcanologists.”
“What's that?” Shammy asked.
“A volcanologist is a person who studies volcanoes,” Dimo explained.
“Okay cool,” said Shammy. “But why pretend to be volcanologists when you can be real ones?!”
“What do you mean Shammy?” the kids asked him.
“Let’s go visit a real volcano!”
“Really? But which one?” Dimo asked.

“How about Kilauea? That crater on the Big Island of Hawaii,” said Pila. She was pointing to a map on their wall.
Shammy and Dimo agreed so Shammy whisked them off to Hawaii!
They arrived in the blink of an eye. Now Pila was wearing a dress and Dimo was wearing a tank top and shorts and Shammy, well, his clothes hadn’t changed at all.
“Here we are: Hawaii! The whole entire chain of Hawaii is made from volcanoes. The volcanoes start underwater then keep building up until they reach the surface of the ocean to form an island. The volcanoes continue erupting when they reach the surface making each island bigger,” Pila said. “And a new island is building right now as we speak! It’s called Kama’ehuakanaloa. But it will take some time before that island reaches the surface."
“That is very interesting,” Dimo said. “But don’t forget the reason we came here– to see Kilauea!”
“Right Dimo. Now which way is Kilauea? Aha! Yess! That way!” Shammy exclaimed, pointing in the direction that they needed to go.
Shammy whisked them off towards Kilauea. They arrived and booked a
room in a hotel with an excellent view of the crater.
“Wow,” Dimo said, staring out the window in their room. “Kilauea looks like it’s glowing!”
“Yes, Dimo, because we got here at nighttime, Kilauea looks like it is glowing! Hey Shammy, do you think you can pull a camera from behind my ear again?” Pila asked.
“Alright Pila,” Shammy said. But instead of pulling a camera from her ear, Shammy pulled one from behind her hair!
Pila giggled. “Thanks Shammy!”
“Can we go outside and check out the volcano?” Dimo asked.
Pila and Shammy agreed and it was even more amazing (and colder) outside. After Pila took about 20 pictures they headed inside to sleep. The friends woke up bright and early the next day.
“Hey, the volcano isn’t glowing anymore!” Shammy noticed.
“That’s because it is day time. The volcano only glows at night time,” Dimo explained.
“So cool!” said Pila.
“I get it now, you two are smart cookies but I wish you were as smart as gold!” said Shammy.
“Haha Shammy!” Pila replied. “Hey, you know how you put bubbles around us when we went to space?”
“Yes.”
“What if we-” Pila started but Dimo finished her sentence.
“Use your magic to put bubbles around us and take a trip into the volcano and underground!” Dimo finished for her.
Shammy agreed and put a magic bubble around Pila, Dimo, and himself so they would be protected from the heat.
“I cannot wait to go inside the volcano and be a volcanologist!” said Dimo.
“Well what are we waiting for? Let's go!” Shammy exclaimed. The kids nodded so Shammy whisked them off into the volcano!
“Look at all of the different types of lava!” Pila exclaimed.
“What do you mean?” Dimo and Shammy asked.
“Well take a look at this lava. See how it’s not that bubbly? That means it doesn’t have much, oh, what was that word again? Oh yeah, silica! It doesn't have much silica. Silica makes the lava thicker which means that air bubbles are trapped inside the lava, building up pressure until it explodes. That's what the lava in most volcanoes is like, but not Kilauea. You can even see the lava up close!” Pila explained.
“So cool! That makes sense, but boy you two are so, so smart!” Shammy said.
“Did you know that when lava is in the Earth, scientists call it magma? Amazing, right?!” said Dimo.
“Really?” Shammy asked.
“Really,” Dimo confirmed.
“Phew! It’s getting hot in here. Shammy, do you think you can make us a shave ice?” Pila asked.
“Sure!” Shammy said and made each of them a very cold, very delicious lilikoi shave ice. Shammy also made one for himself.
“Did you know that some volcanoes are explosive like Mount St. Helens and some flow slowly just like Kilauea? Cool, right?!” Pila and Dimo said together.
“No I did not. And did you notice that opening in the ground?” Shammy asked pointing.
“No, I did not,” the kids answered.
“OH NO! That’s a fissure!” Pila exclaimed.
“A what? It doesn’t look like a fishing pole,” Shammy pointed out.
“Not that kind of fissure Shammy. A fissure is a type of opening in the ground. And in this case lava is pouring out of it!” Dimo exclaimed.
“Shammy, did you bring us back in time to 2018?” The kids asked him.
“Yes, why?”
“OH NOOO!” the kids yelled.
“Why!?” Shammy nearly yelled this time.
“In 2018 there was a HUGE eruption! But we want to stay,” the kids said.
“Then we shall stay,” Shammy said as he whisked them out of the volcano!
“AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!” they screamed.
“AAAAAHHHH Kilauea is erupting! Quick find cover!” Shammy and Dimo yelled.
“I have an idea!” Pila said. “Quick follow me!” She led them to a science lab.
“Shammy, can you make us look like scientists?” Dimo asked.
“Yes I can, Dimo,” Shammy said, turning them into scientists.
“Follow me,” Pila repeated. She led them to buckets filled with lava rocks. Here Shammy took away their disguises.
Pila crushed up the lava rocks and put them on a strange machine. Then something showed up on the computer.
“The different chemical compounds tell us when the lava erupted,” Dimo explained.
“And this lava came from 1955!” Shammy exclaimed, reading the computer.
“Wow! Can you believe it! 1955! Amazing right?” Pila asked.
“It is super cool!” Dimo and Shammy agreed.
“I guess that Pele must be really mad,” Shammy said.
“What do you mean Shammy?” the kids asked him.
“Haven't you ever heard of Pele? The Hawaiian fire goddess?”
“Oh yeah! I remember now!” the kids said.
“Want to meet her?” Shammy asked.
“Yes please!” the kids said. “But what if she is too mad to meet us?”
“Don’t worry, Pele and I have been friends since we were kids! I’m sure everything will go fine. Maybe we will even figure out why she is mad!”
“Well that sure will be helpful right now!” Dimo exclaimed.
Shammy snapped his fingers and whisked them off to see Pele!
“Did you know that her full name is Pelehonuamea? She is the Hawaiian fire goddess,” Shammy said. “Legend says that she lives in Halema‘uma‘u crater, at the summit of Kīlauea.”
“Cool!” The kids said.
They arrived at wherever Shammy had whisked them off to. Shammy introduced Pila and Dimo to Pele.
"Hi Pele!” the kids said together.
“Hello,” Pele said.
“Why are you mad?” Pila asked.
“Well, even though I am a fire goddess I am angry that my home's oceans are being polluted.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” they all said.
“And by the time people notice all the pollution they have created, it may be too late to save the Earth! And my home crater could also get polluted! Oh if it does I’m going to be SO MAD!"
“That’s sooo sad!” Dimo said. “Maybe we can help.”
“Thanks Dimo,” Pele said. “But what can you do to help?"
Pila stepped in. “How about we put on a show?” she suggested. "We can talk about pollution and how it harms the Earth. Plus we can talk about how we can conserve the natural environment."
“That would be amazing!” Pele exclaimed. “I will even give you some of my favorite lava rocks to share with others, if it means saving my home.”
“Thanks!” they all said.
They picked up the rocks, booked a theater, and soon it was time for the big show!
“Ready everybody?” Shammy asked.
“Yep,” the kids replied.
“Then it is show time!”
The friends put on an amazing show. Dimo talked about conserving the ocean and how turtles can mistake plastic bags for jellies.
Pila talked about the different types of lava and lava rocks using Pele’s lava rocks to demonstrate.
Shammy, disguised as a human, told different stories of Pele and other Hawaiian legends like the legends of Maui the demigod.
The friends put on this amazing show about 20 times that day and at the end of each show they gave a special thanks to Pele.
“You kids did such a great job!” Pele told them when they got back. “Will you put on a show for me?”
“Sure thing Pele! It would be our honor!”
The kids put on a show for Pele and tried to make it extra special.
After that they decided to take a quick trip inside the Earth to study its
layers.
“Bye Pele!” the kids said.
"Bye!" said Pele. "Visit again anytime!"
“Let’s take the camomobile!” Shammy suggested. The kids agreed and Shammy whisked them off inside the Earth!
