RAM, or randomly accessed memory, pictured above, is used 

in computer systems to temporarily hold information your 

computer needs to use. Computer engineers can test or create 

RAM, or use it in a system.

What are computer engineers?

     Computer hardware engineers, or computer engineers, 

"research, design, develop, and test computer systems" as a 

whole. They also design and test computer components such as 

RAM, storage, motherboards, processors, and networking tools. 

Computer engineers cause many quick advances in the computer 

technology you or your workplace uses. But what might you 

specifically do as a computer engineer?

     Computer engineers might do any of the following: They may 

design and create blueprints of new computer hardware or test the 

models of what they design. They could also analyze their tests 

and modify their designs. They could work with software companies 

to create hardware that works with newer software, or look over 

computer building lines to make sure everything goes correctly. 

Finally, they could track trends dealing with computer engineering 

and new or updated technology.

Computer engineers also design devices that are not computers, 

but use computer components on the inside such as processors. 

These devices may connect to the Internet. Many car parts and 

medical devices have computer systems in them, especially today 

with the advanced hands- or eyes-free navigation systems in 

cars, or medical devices designed to send X-Rays right to a 

computer or database.

Computer engineers make sure computer systems are compatible 

with modern software. Computer engineers work alongside 

software developers to test advances in hardware and software 

together. Computer engineers will make sure a phone works with 

the latest stable release of Android, for example, or a future 

release. Hardware and software can be developed jointly, and 

computer engineers know basic computer code in order to test 

systems.

Why are computer engineers important?

     Computer engineers are very important these days. As I said 

earlier, they "research, design, develop, and test computer 

systems" as a whole. They also design and test individual 

computer components including, but not limited to RAM, storage, 

motherboards, processors, and networking tools. They have many 

different jobs related to getting your computers up and running.

     "But why is this important?" you may ask. "I thought coders 

spending hours on end programming computers were the reason I 

could use my computer!" Well, they're part of the reason. But you 

have to realize that you can't just have software, you also need 

hardware to run the software on. Computer engineers make and 

put together the various components for your computer, tablet, or 

smartphone, so that YOU can use YOUR software on YOUR device.
