Ella was born in Norfolk Virginia on December 13 1903, Baker was raised on the same land her grandparents were enslaved.

College Life
In 1727 after attending college at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, Baker moved to New York, where she served as a national director of the Young Negros Cooperative League.
In 1938 Baker joined the staff of the National Association of Colored People (NAACP) as an assistant field secretary and later as director of branches.

In 1946 Ella stepped down from her role in the national office. Eventually, She joined the NAACP again in 1952 as president of the New York City branch.
This allowed her to focus on local organizing. She recruited neighbors and community members to get involved in the work.
