Far into the future, there is a land. This land
is a magical land. A land where humanity and
music coexist as living beings. A land where
music and humanity can speak with one
another. A land where notes can sing and live
just like you and me. A land where anything is
possible. A land of what music really is.
This land is called The National Renaissance
Republic, but most people call it the N double
R. The NRR is a place where music is really
alive, and has a story to tell. It is a place of
sound and harmony.

One day after getting out of Topics in
Science class, Middle C decides to go to the
beach with his father, Whole Step.
Curious to know how his species developed,
Middle C asks his father, "How have our people
developed into the group that we are today?"
With a smile on his double bearded face,
Whole Step answers, "Our culture has had a
'baby grand' history. Let me take you back in
time to when we, as a people, began to
dominate as masters of sound."

"Where are we?" Middle C asked.
"We are in the middle ages." Whole Step
said. "This is when music began a steady
incline that is still rising today in our modern
world. The middle age music era dates back to
500 AD and ends at about 1400 AD. A whole
lot happened during this section of musical
history. Lacking electricity and other fun things
that you and I take for granted, our ancestors
passed the time with musical leisure. Come
with me to the distant castle and learn more
about the medevil musical era."

Whole Step seemed very excited to be sharing
the history of the musical people. "Instruments of
the middle ages were scarce. The only ones played
often was the Lute, and the occasional harp during
the rare church services. Composers such as
Gautier de Colnoy and Guillaume Dufay played the
Lute in a style of music called Polyphonics, which is
when you combine a number of parts (instruments
and notes) that harmonize with one another. This
impacted our people by preparing the way for the
next section in musical history, the Renaissance.
Come my son, come and see what great things
once took place."

Middle C was taken aback by what he had already
heard. He stood in silence as he listened to his father
speak on musical evolution. "This is the Renaissance
time era. This dates back to around 1500 AD and as you
can see, things are looking a bit better than in the dark
ages. There was more of a focus on logic and reasoning,
instead of feelings and emotion. Musical revival was
breaking out everywhere. Music was actually being
processed logically, and listeners could tell by the new
performances. Ratios were being thought out and
vibrations were being studied. Music started leaving the
label of hobby and took on the definition of a science.
Music, as of then, was a science. Come to the church
and see what I mean."

"What is that guy playing?" Middle C asked. Without
missing a beat, Whole Step answered, "He is playing
one of the most popular Renaissance instruments. The
Viol, a masterpiece in itself, and when in the hands of a
master bowist, a beautiful sound-maker. Composers
such as this man, named Thomas Tallis, continued in the
Medevil 'Polyphonic' style music, but put great effort into
using it in the church. Using knowledge to produce
better sounds sparked a music revival, and putting the
best composers in the churches started a church revival.
I guess you could say that the musical effects of the
Renaissance were both spiritual and intellectual. But the
path does not end here. Let us travel on to the next era
of musical history."

"Where is everyone?" Middle C asked. Whole Step
laughed.
"They are most likely in the music hall." He said. "This
is the Baroque Era of Music. Dating back to the early to
middle 1700's, music was understood better than ever
before. There was a science that was beginning to rise in
the building of music halls, and many individual
composers were beginning to take the spotlight for
themselves. The Piano and the Violin seemed to
dominate this era. Come, and let us go and see the two
greatest of the Baroque composers, Bach and Vivaldi."
Middle C followed his father into the music hall,
eagerly awaiting the sounds he would hear.

Middle C was very impressed with the playing of
Vivaldi and Bach. "I don't see how it can get much
better than this!" He shouted over the music to his
father.
Whole Step nodded. "Yes." He said. "This music is
very impressive. This era of music gave introduction to
the Opera, concerto, sonata, and other kinds of music.
This era took polyphonic to a whole new level. Towards
the end of this era, there was a birth of music known as
'classical music,' which is what you and I are hearing
now in the flesh. The impact of this era left people
wanting more. Although Vivaldi and Bach sound
amazing, the people just knew that there could be
better. Let me show you the next era of music which is
devoted to this type of music. Classical! Come my son,
and prepare to meet who is perhaps the greatest
composer who has ever lived."

"Wow." Middle C said. "There is a long line for
whoever is playing in there."
"Yes." Whole Step said. "I have brought us to 1800
AD. This is the era known as Classical. This is perhaps
my favorite of all music sections. Although other types
of music was played in this era, church music for
example, there was no contest to classical. Bach and
Vivaldi set the bar high for someone to overcome. It
seemed impossible, but one man did arise and win the
hearts of all music lovers. Inside this music hall is the
master himself. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Let us buy
our tickets, or whatever was purchased for entry in the
1800's, from the strange mustache man at the front so
that we can enter."
