Once upon a tragic math class, there was a
young student named Kevin. He, along with all
his other classmates, was about to get their
order of operations quiz back. When Kevin
got it back he froze in shock. He got a 50%!
He had never gotten such a low grade before
in his life. He was a straight A student, he did
not have any idea what he did wrong.

Kevin went up to the
teacher and asked what
he did wrong that made
him receive a 50%. She
looked at his work for
the problems he got
wrong and said, "Kevin,
you did PEMDAS, but you
may not realize that
there is a tricky
exception to PEMDAS.

"How could that be possible, that's what you taught
us," Kevin stated.
"Yes, I did teach you PEMDAS, but when you do
PEMDAS, you have to remember in some situations
M does not come before D. It's the same for
addition and subtraction. If the division sign comes
before the multiplication sign or the subtraction
sign comes before the addition sign then you go
from left to right."
Kevin wasn't sure this made sense. So the teacher
gave him an example.

"This is the first problem, I will help you through
it."
4 / 2*(7-4)*8 to the power of 2+13=
"The first thing you would do in this kind of
problem is figure out the problem in the
parenthesis. In this equation, the answer would
be 3. Then you would find the exponent. In this
problem the exponent is 8 to the second power, so
the answer would be 64."

"Next, you would do 4/2. The answer is 2, and you
should bring it down to the next line. Try to finish
the rest of the problem on your own. Remember,
move from left to right when dealing with
multiplication, division, addition and subtraction."

operations is ...

is the correct answer!
This is my work....
4/2*3*8 to the power of 2+13
4/2*3*64+13
2*3*64+13
6*64+13
384+13=397
"Now try this, all by yourself!"
6/2*8-(5 to the second power) + 703
