Bochica is one of the best known pre-Hispanic mythology of the Muiscas, an indigenous culture that lived in the central region of Colombia. According to legend, Bochica was a divine being who descended from heaven to teach the Muiscas agriculture, medicine, metallurgy, and the arts. He had taught them to sow and cultivate in the lowlands near the savanna and to pray.

The Zipa, who was the commander of the entire Chibcha empire, along with the chiefs who acted as governors of the savannah towns gathered together to find a solution to a problem. During their discussions, they recalled the existence of Bochica, an old man who was not from their tribe. Bochica had appeared suddenly on a hill in the savanna, and now they remembered him as a possible solution to their problem.
