Preface

    Starting at a new school is something many kids experience. It can often be very challenging and feel isolating at first. This is especially true when kids move to a school where they feel as though they do not fit in due to the color of their skin. When there is one race that is overly dominant in school, it can be hard for the child to feel like they belong. They may feel as though they are different from the other kids in more ways than one. It is important to show them that they do belong and are not so different from the other kids. 

Today is the day that Luna starts 1st grade at her new school.

Luna felt very nervous because she knew none of the other kids. 

All of the kids were laughing together as Luna sat alone at her desk. No kid came up to Luna at all. 

She felt very sad and confused. She began to notice that all of the other kids were White while she was not. 

Luna began thinking to herself, "is this why I am sitting alone, because I am different?"

Luna had never felt so isolated and when lunch came around, she sat in the bathroom.

After lunch, the kids went to recess and all she could think about was going home.

As Luna was sitting by herself, all of a sudden she felt a tap on her shoulder.

Hi! I am Lucille. 

I thought you guys did not want to talk to me because I am different.

Why have you been alone all day?
