The Little Army That
Could:
The Story of General Washington and His Army

By: Chris Smith and Patrick McKenzie

In June of 1775, the Continental Army of the United States was created by Congress in response to the
war with Britain. They also decided that George Washington was the obvious choice for Commander of
that Army. This is the story of that army as they travel across the country and suffer bitter defeat and
sweet victory. This is the story of both perseverance and glory.

The story of Washington's Army, begins in 1775 Boston where the British have
started invading Boston, Massachusetts. Washington's first order of business
was to push back the British and prevent Boston from being destroyed. With the
help of Henry Knox and the bravery of his soldiers, he was able to do just that.
Washington finally pushed the British out of Boston and had a taste of victory,
adding to their pursuit of glory, however, the war was not over.

George Washington's Army's next move was to protect New York from the
British because of its importance to the American Navy. However, the superior
British Army was able to flank Washington's Army and forced them to retreat
from Long Island. Washington had now felt the pain of defeat and army morale
had lowered, but they knew that this was only the beginning and revenge was
on their minds. If they wanted to avenge their defeat, they would have to
persevere.

Morale was low and Winter was upon them. Washington, however, had an idea.
Washington, being familiar with European warfare, understood that the British
wouldn't attack during the Winter nor would they expect an attack. Washington
used this against the British as he crossed the Delaware River to Trenton, New
Jersey where he attacked a Hessian fort on Christmas Eve, 1776 and swiftly
defeated the enemy further adding to their fame and glory.

It is now the Winter of 1777 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and George Washington is
struggling to keep his soldiers alive from the cold and hunger. However, just as things were
getting worse, a man by the name of Friedrich von Steuben, a former Prussian military
commander, came to the rescue after he began training the amateur soldiers. The previously
under trained and under qualified army under Washington, was now no longer relying
completely on luck and Washington as well.

The newly trained army now marched on with a newly developed sense of
confidence and rightfully so. In June of 1778, Washington led his army to
Monmouth County, New Jersey where he attacked British forces with a fury
never seen before. While Washington had expected victory, the battle was a tie
after both armies suffered heavy casualties. However, since the army didn't lose,
the battle only contributed to their glory and was a testament to their bravery
and perseverance.

Washington and his army had now neared the end of the war as they had forced
British forces to Yorktown, Virginia with the help of their French allies. The
ensuing siege on Yorktown resulted in a decisive American and French victory
over the surrendering British, ultimately the end of the Revolutionary War.
Washington's army had just done the impossible. A once rag-tag bunch of
soldiers, had defeated the superpower British army with the help of Friedrich von
Steuben, Washington, and the French army. Sweet Victory! Sweet Glory!

The Americans had done the impossible after defeating the British and their
bravery and valor were why they had won. However, if it wasn't for their
perseverance during defeat, they wouldn't be able to achieve the glory that they
had achieved through victory. It was the perfect underdog story and they were,
in fact, The Little Army That Could.
