There once was a puppy named Spot. He lived at a pet store with lots of other puppies. But Spot was the smallest puppy of all and the other puppies were constantly teasing him about it. None of the people who came to buy a puppy wanted Spot. " He is to small and runty!" they always said. This made Spot very sad.

Meanwhile, there was a girl named Emily. She lived with her father in a small house. Her mother had died when she was only two. She did not know much about her because her father never usually talked about her. Emily knew he never really liked to talk about her. So she never asked.

Emily was the smallest girl in her class and was the teacher's favorite. None of the other girls in her school liked her. They were always teasing her about her clothes, her hair, and how she looked. They also had a nickname for her, they always called her "Teacher's pet". They told Emily that the teacher only liked her because she was the smallest. Emily was very sad.

Now, Emily worked every afternoon after a very bad day at school at the local pet store. She loved to be there with all the animals because they actually liked her. But the one she loved most was a little puppy named Spot. Spot loved to play with Emily because Emily was the only one who cared about him. " Spot," She always said to him. " You're just like me. You're the smallest puppy and all the other puppies don't like you." Spot just looked up at her with loving eyes that seemed to say, " Yes, we're the same. But in a wonderful way."

One day, Emily convinced her father to come to the pet store to see Spot. " He's the only puppy left," she explained. " He'll be lonely without me!" So her father agreed. Emily was so happy as she ran over to Spot and give him a big cuddle. Emily's father was so glad to see his little girl be so happy around Spot. " See Daddy," she said. " Look how cute he is!" She giggled as Spot licked her face. " Yes, he is cute." her father replied. Emily's father decided to talk to the pet store owner.
