The Dongshan Residence: A Hub of Post-War Reconstruction

In 1937, Ling Daoyang assumed the role of Director of the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Agriculture and Forestry, residing at No. 7 Peizheng Road in Guangzhou’s Dongshan district.
His two-story mansion, featuring a distinctive cream-colored stucco façade with a curved balcony and hexagonal protrusion, exemplified the fusion of Lingnan practicality and Western architectural aesthetics. During the Anti-Japanese War, Ling orchestrated agricultural rehabilitation plans from this residence.

As Director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) Guangdong Office post-1945, he spearheaded famine relief, epidemic control, and agricultural tool distribution, revitalizing Guangdong’s war-torn economy.

The residence also served as an intellectual hub. Ling, a staunch advocate of “forestry saving the nation,” had earlier drafted China’s first Forestry Law and established Arbor Day, viewing ecological stewardship as vital to national resilience.

In Guangdong, he promoted cash crops like tung oil trees and camphor trees, integrating soil conservation techniques to combat erosion—a legacy documented in his manuscript Perspectives on China’s Agricultural Economy, which emphasized “governing forests as governing the nation”.
