Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States. For
the 70th anniversary of D-Day, he visited France. At the
airport, right before he left to go back to the United States, I
met him and shook his hand. After that, I became interested in
learning about his life. This short biography is about his life
prior to his Presidency.
Barack Obama was born on August 4th in Honolulu,
Hawaii. Barack means ‘‘blessed’’ in the Swahili
language. His dad was from Kenya. In 1959, his dad
was the first African student to attend the university of
Hawaii in Honolulu. His mom's name was Stanley Ann
Dunham. She grew up in Kansas, California, Texas, and
Washington. When Barack was two years old, his dad
moved to Cambridge to attend Harvard. Barack and his
mom stayed in Hawaii. A few years later, his parents
divorced.
When Barack was six years old, he moved to Indonesia
so his mom could marry Lolo Soetoro. He has a half-
sister called Maya.
When Barack was 10 years old, he moved back to
Hawaii and lived with his grand-parents, who had a big
influence on him. His dad then visited him for a month.
In 1979, Barack graduated from High School. In 1982,
his dad died in a car accident.
His parents did not have a lot of money, so Barack went
to a public school and a Catholic school. His mother
thought that Barack was not challenged at school, so
every day, she woke him up at 4A.M and taught him
English lessons.
He went to college in Los Angeles Occidental College-
1979-1981. He transferred to Columbia University, New
York City, New York. He graduated in 1983. Barack
worked in finance for a year after graduation.
Barack moved to Chicago in
1985. In 1988, he went back
to school to study law and
went to Harvard. In 1990, he
was elected president of
Harvard Law Review
becoming the first African-
American to hold the position.
His role was to control the
journals eighty editors. With
him in charge, everyone had
a saying. Barack graduated in
1991 with honors.
After graduation, Obama moved back to Chicago.
Two years earlier, Obama had met Harvard law school
graduate Michelle LaVaughn Robinson with whom he
had stayed in touch with while he was away. Barack
married Michelle in 1992. They have two kids. Malia
Ann- born in 1998, and Natasha (Sacha)-born in 2001.
Obama taught constitutional law at the University of
Chicago from 1992-2004. He also worked in the law
Firm Miner, Barnhill, and Galland. He focused on civil
rights issues and discrimination cases. In 1992, he held
the Illinois project VOTE to get more African-Americans
allowed to vote. After law school, Obama was becoming
more popular. He wrote ‘‘Dreams From From My Father:
A Race and Inheritance. ’’ The book was published in
1995.
When Barack Obama entered politics, he ran for the
Illinois State Senate as a Democrat. He was well known
for all his work and won the election. Obama was
responsible for public health. He worked on prevention
and treatment of AIDS. Barack also worked to reduce
racial profiling, reduce Illinois taxes and expand early
education.
