how will I ever be
able to concentrate?!

I feel so alert!

Bob laid in bed late at night wanting to go to sleep so he
could be efficient in school the next day. However, contrary
to what his mother thinks, biological factors would not allow
him to fall asleep. Bob has a hard time waking up in the
morning and concentrating during school. This is because his
circadian rhythm for wakefulness on his 24 hour clock is not
in sync with the start time of his school. Since he is not able
to fall asleep earlier, he suggested to move back the start
time of his school. His teachers seem to get annoyed with
him because they are all full of energy since their circadian
rhythm conveniently matches the schools start time. Bob
compiled research and presented it to the administration.
They decided to take his brilliant idea into consideration.
With two hours of extra sleep, Bob and his fellow class mates
were able to concentrate more and work more thoroughly.

Teachers find out how their students get
motivated and apply it to their classes.

School!!

= cake

Sally and Billy have been having a difficult time
concentrating and staying on task because they are
simply unmotivated to do well in school. Their teacher,
Mr. Harry, noticed this and acted on it immediately by
talking to them and figuring out exactly what he could do
to motivate them. He found that his students work
harder if they have something to extrinsically motivate
them. By taking his time to get to know Billy and Sally
better, he found that cake did the trick! From now on, Mr.
Harry bakes his famous double-decker chocolate
strawberry cake for every test that they get a good grade
on. This form of positive reinforcement has pushed Sally
and Billy to strive to become the best students that they
can be. Other teachers at their school have also utilized
this technique by personally getting to know their
students to find better ways to motivate them.

Have a trip, carnival, or "fun day" at
the end of the year for all students to
increase school spirit

hands in the aiiiiirrr!

These students have trouble keeping themselves motivated
sometimes; to keep them working hard all year the school decided to
set up a carnival for the end of the year. It is believed that this
extrinsic motivator can be used to enhance the students intrinsic
motivation. Since intrinsic motivation cannot be forced upon them,
the school needs to take matters into their own hands and provide
some extrinsic motivation. This is why they have decided to plan a
carnival at the year for all of the students, even for Larry the liger
and Ned the gnome. The reward can only be granted if all of the
students do well, so hopefully wiser students such as Kim Chi will
motivate his fellow classmates to be the best that they can be. The
carnival will be at the end of the year, for parents, students, and
teachers all agree that that is the most difficult time of the year to
motivate or be motivated. After a whole year of hard work, the
students are looking forward to a fun day with lollipops, ice cream,
and butterflies!

Find ways to lower the
stress level of students.

It's Cassandra's senior year and she has so much going on,
with college, swimming, and all her classes, that she gets
overly stressed out by it all. Having all this stress during the
year affects her ability to do well with her school work and
leaves her irritable. To try and reduce stress and help the
students do their best the school provides students with a
"stress free" zone where they can go to relax. There is a
teacher there that helps the students deal with their stress;
they can listen to music, do yoga, or go for a swim. Also,
once a week they have a group of students who get together
to talk about their stress and work on reducing it, because
they can relate to each other and share ways how they deal
with stress. Being stress free allows Cassandra and her
classmates to put all their attention on their school work and
not on stress; which allows them to do their best!

Students who do well academically
should be rewarded with special
privileges.

home for lunch!

Ralph is a great student who does very well
academically. He does find that him and his friends
sometimes have trouble keeping themselves
motivated, especially towards the end of the year or
before breaks. His school wanted to find a way to
reward Ralph and other great students for doing well,
and also keep them motivated throughout the entire
year. The school decided to give students that do well
academically special privileges. Ralph is now allowed to
leave the school during lunch, and can go home or out
to eat lunch. This privilege works as an external
motivator for Ralph and his peers. They know they
must keep their grades up if they want to keep leaving
the school during lunch. This helps to keep them
motivated throughout the entire year.

many people for
proper learning!

I understand
individual needs!

Make class
sizes smaller

Mr. Grump's class, students tend to be usually out of control
and have trouble focusing on the lesson. There are too many
students in the class for him to provide the individual
attention his students need. This situation is very frustrating
for Mr. Grump and his students; it also affects the students
ability to learn, because there is a negative correlation
between class size student performance. In Miss Flower's
class, however, there are the perfect amount of students for
proper learning. Since the class has a manageable number of
students she is able to get to know her students and find out
their individual needs and learning styles. Her students are
able to work to their full potential, feel comfortable in class,
and actually enjoy what they are learning. Mr. Grump is now
trying to get more small classes so his students can do as
well as Miss Flower's students do!

7. Encourage more motivation
from home.

wow wow

his homework before
he goes out to play?

you to motivate him!

Betty was confused as to if she should be doing something
with her son, Peter. Peter's Math teacher, Mr. Kitty, informed
Betty (Peter's mother), that Peter has been struggling in
class. Mr. Kitty like to keep the parents of each student in in
class aware of their child's performance. His reason for doing
this is because he knows that studies shows that parents who
are involved in their child’s academic life have a insightful
effect on the child’s ability to learn and help inspire them to
gain an appreciation for learning that can last a lifetime! Mr.
Kitty also sends home weekly surveys asking parents to
comment on what they notice their child is both struggling on
and progressing with. Although Peter sometimes feels he may
be responsible enough to get the help he needs without his
mother getting involved, he does admit that the parent and
teacher communication has helped him greatly!
