In Swag City, Subland there is a fairly small farm that 

grows Pyrethrum, which is a flower that is used to 

make a non-synthetic pesticide called Pyrethrin. 

The farm is a 2 hectacres, or 5 acres, which is an 

averagely sized farm in this region of the world. Even 

thought the farm is relatively small it still practices 

commercial agriculture because the it sells its 

products.  

Also, despite the fact that the farm practice 

commercial agriculture it does not receive subsities 

from the government.

The Pyrethrum flower is harvested by hand by the 

family that owns the farm. The family chooses to 

grow Pyrethum because it has a high demand in 

MDCs such as the Untied States. 

The Pyrethum that is sold to MDCs is transported by 

truck to nearby ports, then in is shipped all over the 

world by boat to the target consumers, people in 

MDCs. 

Some problems that the Pyrethrum farm may face 

would be a decrease in demand for the product in 

MDCs. If this were to happen their is nothing that 

could be done about it. Also, Subland could 

experience a drought that would limit the ability to 

grow anything. To help combat this problem the farm 

could increase irrigation in the fields. 

If you were to place this farm into the Von Thunen 

Model it would be located in the third ring because 

the product does not need an excessive amount of 

land to grow, and it also is not too expensive to 

transport.

In Subland agriculture is a substantial part of the 

economy. This is due to the majority of the 

population that are farmers.
