There was a girl
called Amanda and
she was very unfit.
She wanted to be
physically active so
Amanda decided to
start playing a
weekly sport. She
chose to play Netball
because all of her
friends played that
sport.

When she had been
playing netball for about
5 weeks she loved it and
was getting better as
well. She noticed there
were people who
controlled the play with
whistles. These people
were called officials or
umpires.

Amanda learnt that
officials are important
because without them
the game would be
unfair and everyone
would want to be in
charge. She learnt to
stop playing when she
heard the whistle and
listen and obey their
decisions.

Amanda wanted to earn
some money so she
decided to become a
netball official. She went to
the head office and asked
about the job and they
said that they can sign her
up for some training
courses.
So every Tuesday after
school Amanda trains to be
an umpire.

Amanda is now a
professional netball
official. She is going to
be a state umpire next
year and is really
excited.
