Leland the Lion has always wanted to be a lifeguard.
He wants to sit on the big, tall, lifeguard stand and watch
over all the animals on the beach and in the water and
make sure they are all safe.
Because Leland wants to be a lifeguard, he likes to stand
close to the lifeguard stand and watch the lifeguards do
their job in hopes that this will help him learn how to be a
lifeguard.
The three lifeguards who work on the beach are J.P. the
Penguin, Paul the Puffin and Scottie the Seal.

One day while Leland the Lion was standing next to the
lifeguard stand, Leland saw J.P. the Penguin jump off the
stand and paddle out on the rescue board to help rescue
Matty & Melissa Muskrat who were being pulled out by the
tide.
A rescue board is a very big surfboard which a lifeguard
can use to help struggling animals get back to shore.

J.P. the Penguin helped Matty & Melissa Muskrat onto the
rescue board and then caught the next wave and surfed
the two muskrats all the way in to the beach.

When J.P. the Penguin came back to the stand, Leland the
Lion said, “You are such a great surfer J.P.! Could you help
me learn how to surf so that I can help save animals and be
a lifeguard too?”
J.P. the Penguin said, “I’d love to Leland but you’re a lion
and everyone knows lions can’t surf very well. Maybe you
should try and be something other than a lifeguard” and
then J.P. the Penguin got back up on the stand to watch
the water.

The next day while Leland was standing next to the
lifeguard stand, Leland watched Paul the Puffin fly over
the ocean and spot Marty the Moose swimming towards a
rip current which is a strong ocean current that can pull
swimmers away from the beach. Rip currents are very
dangerous.

Paul the Puffin quickly flew down towards Marty the
Moose and then blew his whistle loudly to warn him that
he was swimming towards a dangerous rip current.
Marty thanked Paul the Puffin and quickly started
swimming in the opposite direction.

When Paul the Puffin came back to the stand, Leland the
Lion said, “You are such a great spotter Paul! Could you
help me learn how to spot and warn animals in trouble so
that I can help save animals and be a lifeguard too?”
Paul the Puffin said, “I’d love to Leland but you’re a lion
and everyone knows lions can’t fly or blow a whistle very
well. Maybe you should try and be something other than a
lifeguard” and then Paul the Puffin got back up on the
stand to watch the water.

The next day, while Leland was standing next to the
lifeguard stand, Leland saw two little bunnies stuck on a
sandbar.
A sandbar is an area in the ocean that is very shallow and
easy to walk to during low tide.
However, when the tide comes in, and the water around
the sandbar becomes very deep, animals, especially little
animals, have a hard time leaving the sandbar and getting
back to shore.

Scottie the seal, who also saw that the two bunnies were
stuck, quickly jumped off of the lifeguard stand and
grabbed a red rescue torpedo.
A red rescue torpedo is a red plastic flotation device which
helps lifeguards pull animals in to shore.
Scottie then ran to the water with the red rescue torpedo,
dove in and swam out to the two bunnies.

Leland watched Scottie as he told the two little bunnies to
grab the handles on the sides of the red rescue torpedo.
Once the bunnies had a firm grip on the red rescue
torpedo, Scottie the Seal swam them towards the beach,
pulling them safely to shore.

When Scottie the Seal came back to the stand, Leland the
Lion said, “You are such a great swimmer Scottie! Could
you help me learn how to swim so that I can help save
animals and be a lifeguard too?”
Scottie the Seal said, “I’d love to Leland but you’re a lion
and everyone knows lions can’t swim very well. Maybe you
should try and be something other than a lifeguard” and
then Scottie the Seal got back up on the stand to watch the
water.

Leland the Lion was very sad as it seemed that he would
never be a lifeguard and be able to help other animals.
Then, all of a sudden, a big storm appeared. The sky
turned very dark, it started to thunder, the ocean waves
got bigger, the ocean currents got stronger and it got very,
very windy.

The lifeguards knew they had to get everyone out of the
water.
But before they could, J.P. the Penguin saw Stanley the
Squirrel struggling to swim ashore. He quickly jumped
down from the stand, picked up his rescue board, and
tried to carry the rescue board to the ocean so that he
could paddle it out and save Stanley.
However, the wind was so strong J.P. the Penguin was not
able to carry it.
“I can’t carry the rescue board with all this wind” thought
J.P. the Penguin.
