Once upon a time, there was a teacher named
Miss Jane.
Miss Jane would stand up the front of the
classroom and talk all day.
“Today we will be looking at the history of
Australian Prime Ministers… blah, blah, blah,
blah.”

All the children in Miss Jane’s class, would sit silently at
their desks, mutely reading from their textbooks and
writing in their workbooks.
“This work is so boring!” the children would complain.
“We wish we could use the computers and the internet.
That would be a much more interesting activity!”
“Quiet now!” Miss Jane would crossly admonish. “Your
pointless prattling is very distracting. Please continue
reading your textbooks quietly. I do not want to hear
anymore talking.”
The children solemnly returned to reading.

It wasn’t that Miss Jane didn’t like discussion or
collaboration in the classroom, or that she didn’t
think the use of technology such as computers and
the internet would make her lessons more
engaging, but rather, Miss Jane was unsure and
afraid of incorporating these learning strategies
into her teaching.
