are giant pieces of land called
continents. Scientists, or people who
study science, have noticed that
over millions of years, the continents
have moved just a little, nearly 2 cm each
year! This is something called
"continental drift."

cut it in half. This is what it
would look like. The Earth has
4 parts: the inner core, the outer
core, the mantle, and the crust.

called tectonic plates. Scientists
think that these plates move around on
the magma, or melted rock, below them,
like how cereal floats and moves on milk
in a bowl. This is what causes continental
drift.

volcanoes and earthquakes happen.
Divergent plate boundaries are tectonic
plates that move away from each
other. This is where volcanoes form.

5

tectonic plates move toward each other.
One plate then slips underneath the other
plate and turns back into magma. This is
what causes something called mid-ocean
ridges and volcanoes.

6

Transform boundaries move side-to-side
against each other. Faults happen where
the plates meet.

crust. When earthquakes happen by a fault,
rocks from the fault can become loose
and fall in the crack! Faults can be very
small, centimeters long, or very big,
kilometers long!

convergent or divergent boundaries meet
or separate. Magma, or melted rock,
shoots out of the top of the volcano from
underneath the Earth's crust. Magma
then becomes lava after it reaches the
surface of Earth.

break, and the break sends waves of energy
to the surface. The ground shakes,
and some earthquakes are so bad, buildings and
houses can be destroyed! Earthquakes are measured
on something called the Richter Scale, 1 being a
not so bad earthquake, and 10 being very,
very bad!
