Between the months of May and August,
most of the nesting is taking place.

Sea turtles are cold-blooded animals.

Carapace is another word for a sea turtle's
top shell.

Sea turtles can dive as deep as 1,00 feet
deep into the ocean to find food.

Sea turtles eat jellyfish, seaweed, crabs,
shrimp, sponges, snails, algae, and mollusks.

The flatback sea
turtle is one of the
seven species of
sea turtles. Their
shells have a very
flat top.

The Green sea turtle is another of the seven
species. They are most common of all sea
turtles.

The Hawksbill sea turtle is the next of the
different species. Their shells are heart
shaped.

Injuries to sea turtles can be caused by
water-crafts, as well as accidents with fishing
nets.

A jelly-like liquid comes out of their eyes
to get rid of the salt. Sometimes it looks
like they are crying!

The Kemp Ridley sea turtle is also another kind
of species. They are going to be the smallest,
weighing only up to 100 pounds.

The Leatherback and Loggerhead two of
species of sea turtles. The Leatherback is the
largest. The Loggerhead has a much larger head
than the rest of the species.

Sea turtles will migrate to reach warmer
when it gets too cold.

They will make nests on the beach shore to
lay their eggs.

The Olive Ridley sea turtle is the last of
the seven species. They also have heart
shaped shells, but are gray and green.

The plastron is the bottom side of the shell,
usually a yellowish color.

It is important to keep quiet when baby turtles
hatch on the beach. The babies must find their
way to the ocean and distraction from humans
can disrupt that pattern.

Sea turtles are part of the reptile family.

Sea turtles are skilled and fast swimmers. They
can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour!

Temperature of the nesting eggs will determine if
the baby turtles will be boys or girls. Warmer
temperatures will produce girls, while colder
temperatures produce boys.
