An accident caused by a truck driver got Derek severely 

injured. Thankfully he made it out alive, but there was bad 

news. After hearing from the doctor his lower back was hurt 

so badly to the point he needed major surgery left him 

devastated. Knowing he couldn't play baseball this season and 

that the injury could have an affect on him playing baseball 

for the rest of his life really upset him.

Staying positive about what happened and how 

he was going to overcome the injury made 

Derek a better person. Rehabilitation was 

tough, but nothing excited him more then 

thinking about being on the baseball field.   

As time went on it took Derek two full baseball 

seasons to recover, and his anticipation to get 

back on the field was through the roof... But 

something unexpectedly goes wrong as he hurts 

his throwing arm and needs surgery. This puts 

him out another season.  

By the age of of 15 he is in High School all 

healed from injuries. Trying out for the baseball 

team. After being out of baseball for years it will 

be difficult for him to overcome and make the 

team. A cut list was posted and he found out he 

did not make the team. Completely devastated 

not knowing what to do without the game of 

baseball in his life. Does he quit, or push 

forward to get better at it? 

Derek made it a goal not to give up. He did 

not make the baseball team all through High 

School. After graduating he went off to college 

and walked on to play baseball. There he 

made the team and played all four years of 

Collegiate baseball as a pitcher.
