Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Phrygia;
filled with wizards, fairies and enchantments,
there lived a King and Queen and their beloved
son, Prince Pelops. To celebrate the birth of the
new born Prince, King Tantalus and the Queen
Dione decided to have a royal ball and invite all
the wizards and fairies in the kingdom.

The ball was magical. The Queen dressed in
her finest gown and the King wore his biggest
crown. All the wizards and fairies from
throughout the kingdom came to see the
young Prince. But during the ball something
terrible happened.

Poseidon, a wizard of the sea, took the Prince
and vanished. The whole kingdom searched for
Pelops but he could not be found. The King
grew very upset, as did the Queen. Seeing the
pain they were in, the people of the kingdom
decided to lie, and they told the King and
Queen that they had found the Prince— but it
was too late, and he was gone. The King and
Queen wept at the news of their son’s death.

Meanwhile, deep under the sea, Poseidon hid
his identity as a wizard to kept Pelops safe and
raised him as his son. His love for Pelops grew
more and more each day. He was very fond of
horses, and showed Pelops how to ride horses
and chariots, and also how to fight with a
sword. Pelops grew into a strong young man
and Poseidon was very proud of him.

On Pelops' 18th birthday Poseidon decided to
tell him the truth about his past. When he told
Pelops that he took him from his parents, the
King and Queen, Pelops was very upset. He
decided to leave the man he thought was his
father and find his real parents. Poseidon tried
to explain his action, but it was too late. Pelops
had already decided to run away.

Pelops travelled to the kingdom of Pisa. He met
with the Royals to see if they knew where his
parents' kingdom was. While he was with
them, he met the beautiful Princess
Hippodamia, and they fell in love at first sight.
Pelops went to her father, King Oenomaus, to
ask his permission for them to marry.

The King was a grumpy old man, and he did
not like Pelops for wanting to take away his
daughter. He loved his daughter, and was
saddened by the thought of losing her— as he
would, if she were married. So he set a
challenge for Pelops; if he could beat the King
in a chariot race, he could marry Hippodamia.
But if he lost the race, he would have to leave
the kingdom forever. Out of his undying love
for Hippodamia, Pelops agreed to race the
King.

After Pelops had agreed to race the King,
Hippodamia warned him about her father,
telling him that he was known across the
kingdoms for winning all the chariot races.
Although Pelops had learnt how to drive a
chariot when he was a boy, he wasn’t
confident he could win against the King. He
needed help, and there was only one person he
knew that could teach him how to win the
race. He had to go and find Poseidon.

Poseidon was overwhelmed with joy when he
saw Pelops. He went over to him and threw out
his arms, embracing him. He said he was so
sorry for what he had done. Pelops looked at
Poseidon, the only father he had ever known,
and wiped away a tear from his eye. Pelops
forgave Poseidon, because he knew he acted
out of love.
