Anthony was a little boy who lived in
a big city. It was loud and big and
bright. Even though it was smoky from
all the air pollution, Anthony loved it.

He loved walking to school with his
daddy and looking at all the big
buildings. He loved seeing all the
different people, and he loved when he
got to stop at the little carts and get
a hot pretzel after school if he had
done well in school that day.

He loved when he came home and he sat next
to the fireplace, even though the smoke made
him cough.

One day, Anthony was running around at
school when all of a sudden he couldn’t
breathe. It felt just like when his
daddy smoked his pipe. His friends got
the teacher, and Anthony went home
sick.

The next day, Anthony couldn’t breathe
either. He stayed home from school
with his daddy and they read books
together. He even made Anthony his
favorite lunch, so he would forget
about how he was having problems
taking a big breath.

That night, Anthony started to feel a
little better, but his daddy brought
him to the doctor anyway. The second
they stepped outside, he felt a little
worse. When Anthony passed his
favorite food cart, the smoke made
him cough. He couldn’t stop, and
suddenly he couldn’t breathe at all.
His daddy carried him to the doctors
office.

When they got inside, Anthony felt a
little better again. It seemed like
whenever he was outside in the smoke,
it was harder to breathe. The doctor
came in, and his daddy told her all
about Anthony’s breathing. She took a
bunch of notes and then turned to both
of them.

“It looks like you have asthma,” she said.
Anthony was confused and a little scared.
“What’s asthma?” he asked.

“Asthma is a disease which makes it hard for
you to breathe.” Anthony was still confused.
The doctor picked up two straws- one big one
and one small one.
“Anthony, if I asked you to breathe through one
of these straws, which would be easier?”
Anthony pointed to the big one.
“Now, your lungs normally act like the big
straw, but when asthma comes in, they shrink
down to the little straw, which makes it hard to
breathe.”
