The Southern Reconstruction was bad for the 

people living in the South.

Jackson was a freedman. He enjoyed the freedom he 

now had because he didn't have to work for his old 

master.

The man he used to work for 

was a cruel man but, he lost all 

the workers he had.

He went to the unemployment office to get a job, 

so he could buy a house. When he got there there 

was a long line of freedmen, or former slaves.

A little while later, a large group of Southern 

Farmers showed up at the unemployment office. 

They started to insult the former slaves and 

demand segregation, or separation of the two 

races.

The local militia came to put down the riot. The 

rioters called the militia men scalawags, or 

Southerners who support the reconstruction. 

Soon several men from the army came.

The rioters threw rocks and called the soldiers 

carpetbaggers, or Northerners who moved to 

the South and supported reconstruction.

Eventually the soldiers and militia men were 

able to make the rioters leave. Jackson 

eventually made it to the front of the line and 

was able to get a job working on a farm.
