First, my dad, for not "bugging" me, and sharing my interest in insects.
Second, to my AMAZING 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Makowski,
for believing in me, and helping me to accomplish my book writing dream.
THANK YOU, BOTH!!

There are different types of insects. Some can bite you and
some cannot. Insects are very small creatures. All insects
have six legs; and may eat plants or other insects. All
insects have different habits (such as just flying around or
working together to get food.) Many people don't like
insects. Whether you like them or not, we need insects.
They are VERY IMPORTANT. Spiders are not insects, they
have eight legs. If you get bit by an insect, don't worry!
Some insects evolve or change. Some have pincers. Many
insects eat differently. They have an abdomen and a
thorax. Insects may bite you because they want to protect
their babies or themselves if they feel threatened.

Ants can be found almost any place in the world,
working as a team to collect food for their
colony. The queen spends most of her time laying
eggs. They use their antennae to smell. Ants
don't have lungs like us! They breathe through tiny
holes all over their body. They can be fire ants,
black ants or other types.

Usually baby wasps will grow up inside a wasp
nest, but some wasps will lay their eggs inside
other insects. That host insect will slowly be
eaten up by the baby wasp as it grows up.
Wasps generally eat other insects, but some
species are vegetarian. They have a very
nasty sting! Most wasps have venom at the
rear of the abdomen. They can use this
several times, unlike bees who can only use it
once.

The Praying Mantis is a master of
disguise. It camouflages itself to
look like a leaf while it sneaks up on its
prey. The Praying Mantis got its name
because it looks likes it is praying.
They are very harmless.

There are about 17,000 different butterfly
species. It's possible there can be EVEN
MORE!! Most adult butterflies can only live
for two weeks. Butterflies fly around all day
collecting their nectar. Like the Praying
Mantis, they are harmless.

Cicadas can spend 16 to 17 years
underground just growing up. When
they come out of the ground, the adult
Cicadas live only for a few weeks. The
male Cicadas make the loudest sound
in the insect world. You don't want to
hear it. If you stand right next to him
he can sound as loud as a lawn
mower!
