Ralph didn't like going to school. Whenever he spoke
he would stutter and the other kids would make fun of
him. He would never put his hand up in class and
didn't talk to his classmates.
Poor Ralph ended up eating lunch alone everyday. He
couldn't control the fact that he stuttered. He tried so
hard not to, but the words just wouldn't come out. The
best part of his day was when the school bus took him
home.
During dinner, Ralph was pretty quiet. "How was
school today?" his Dad asked. But he didn't reply.
Ralph just sat there and ate his supper. His parents
looked at each other with a concerned look on their
faces.
"Once you're finished dinner Ralph, I have a surprise
for you!" his Dad said. Ralph's face lit up and he
started to smile. "Okay Ralph, close your eyes and
say hello to your new friend." Ralph shut his eyes
tight and when he opened them, he saw a cute little
bird flying towards him. "I love him!" Ralph
exclaimed.
"Looking after a bird is a lot of hard work Ralph" said
his Mom. "I know. And I will take the best care of
him. He's going to be my best friend. I'm going to call
him Sammy, Sammy the song bird!" "He's not going
to care that I stutter because he loves me."
"You'll have lots of time to play with Sammy. Now it's
time for you to go upstairs and practice reading" Dad
said.
Ralph went to his room and started to read out loud.
He would read a couple of words before he started to
struggle with the next one. He got frustrated and
tossed his book against the wall. He felt a tear stream
down his cheek. "I'll never be able to read out loud!"
he cried.
The loud noise scared Sammy as he flew around the
room. "Why don't you try singing the words instead?"
Sammy asked. "You can talk?" a shocked Ralph
asked. "And I can sing. And so can you. Give it a
shot!"
So Ralph began to sing the words rather than reading
them. And all of a sudden, he was able to finish one
sentence and then another and another......
Ralph's parents heard the singing coming from his
room and so they headed upstairs. They stood outside
and listened to their son's beautiful singing voice.
Every now and then they'd hear Sammy chirping
along. Well, they never expected this when Ralph's
dad brought home a little song bird. But they were
both smiling from ear to ear as tiny tear drops rolled
down their cheeks. They were so proud of their boy.
The next day at school, Ralph felt like a new person.
He was no longer afraid of having to read out loud or
talk to his schoolmates. "Hello everybody!" he said as
he entered Mr. Merante's Grade Four class. "Was that
Ralph?" asked a little girl. He then approached his
teacher and asked if he could lead the class in singing
'O Canada'. "For sure Ralph" his surprised teacher
said.
