In 1780, the first potato came to
Ireland and instantly became popular.
Potatoes increased the Irish population from 4
million to 8 million (Irish Potato Famine,
2006,Before the Famine, 2000).
Ireland lived off of the potato because that was
the only substantial food there. Especially in the
winter time for the poor because it was easy to
grow so it did not cost that much (Irish Potato Famine,
2006). Soon the potato was apart of every bodies meal.
They would have it for breakfast lunch and dinner.
This specialty was short-lived. Soon after a
disease hit Ireland and the crops started to die
(The British Intent,1995). Since England imported
the potatoes Ireland thought they were to blame.
The plants started to rot and turn black. At first
the Irish thought it was just the fog and it would
end soon. But the plants continued to rot and the
crops started to die (IP, 06). The wind spread the
disease to other plants and they died in front of
every bodies eyes.
Ireland never saw that before. They knew
about crop failures and diseases but they never
experienced that type of disease. They didn't
take it seriously so they started eating the
potatoes and they became very sick and died.
The Irish believed that the British put a
disease in the crops and sent it over. Of
course,England denied anything ever being
put into the potatoes (The Famine That Never
Was, 2011).
