The Patriotes peacefully opposed the Roman Catholic but their demands
were rejected. After the British began executing protesters, Papineau and
William Lyon MacKenzie submitted "92 Resolutions." The resolutions
consisted of demands for major changes in the colonial government.
However, the government took 3 years to respond, and only returned with
10 resolutions, all of which denied the rights of the Legislative assembly.

who criticized the government. He also closed Le Canadien, a reformer
newspaper. After 30 years of attempted political reform, in November
of 1837, skirmishes and battles between Patriotes and the government
began. However, full rebellion did not begin until the attempted arrest
of Papineau, who fled to the US.

Englishman who was also a leader of the Patriotes, took over. The
English sent troops to stop the French rebels, ending in the death of
many. Hundreds of Frenchman died in the battles of Saint-Charles and
Saint-Eustache, in which the Patriotes were defeated.

Due to both the lack of support from the Catholic church and the
intimidation caused by the British army, after only a month,
the first rebellion of lower Canada ended in December of 1837.
