One cold January day on a farm in Virginia... Doris
Ann Waddell was born a twin to a landowner and
his wife. But a terrible disease was going around,
and Doris Ann and her brother caught it. They all
hoped and prayed the mommy and babies would get
better. But sadly, the little boy didn't survive.
Little Doris Ann lived, weighing only a few pounds.
She was a miracle baby.

On those early mornings in Virginia... Doris Ann
would go to school. She didn't get there in cars or
scooters. She took a horse and buggy. That horse
and buggy were her dream come true until...

One school morning in small town Virginia... Doris
Ann rode her horse and buggy to school. But when
she was done for the day and ready to return
home, she found that her horse and buggy had run
away. Little Doris Ann had to walk all the way
home.

On an afternoon many years later... after she
graduated high school and finished college, she
taught in North Carolina for a year or two. She
had earned a degree in home economics, and was
able to teach chemistry. But a new special job was
awaiting her....

During these years after the Great Depression...
Doris Ann received a new job. The country was
being remodeled as President Roosevelt wrote the
New Deal, creating new government jobs for fellow
Americans. Doris Ann drove with her government
gas to farms in Virginia, where she would help
teach farmers' wives how to get the best "bang
for their buck".

On one such lovely day in Surrey, Virginia... Doris Ann
met a sailor from the navy. He was a young man from
Dallas named William Howard Beasley and he was now
staying at her same boarding house. The landlady
thought he was quite the gentleman with his big blue
eyes and southern charm. When brown-haired, green-
eyed Ann, as she was called, saw him downstairs, she
said, "So you're from Texas?" And Howard, thinking
she was so pretty, immediately knew she was
interested. So...

They began to court. And he asked her to marry
him. But since he was all the way from Texas, and
she was from Virginia, she wanted to make sure
that he was absolutely certain. So she told him,
"Go back to Texas and see all your old girlfriends.
And if you still feel the same, I'll marry you." So
Howard returned back to Dallas, but he didn't
stay there. He came right back to Virginia... with
a ring!

They were married on
June 7 of 1943, and
everyone in town was
at the wedding, held
in the parlor of the
boarding house. Not a
doctor, minister, or
county clerk could be
found because they
were all in attendance.
