The instrument I chose was a violin. The reason I
chose the violin is because the violin always
caught my attention and as a young child I had a
toy violin that I loved to play. Also, I want to
learn more about it.

The instrument family the violin belongs to is
the strings family. The strings are the largest
family of instruments in the orchestra. The
belly, the sound post, and the bass bar are
made of spruce, a light but strong softwood.
The back, ribs, neck, pegbox, scroll, and
bridge are of maple, a hardwood. The
fingerboard of a violin is of ebony. The strings
are made from metal. The hair of the bow is
traditionally horse hair. The hair must be
frequently rubbed with rosin in order to grip
the strings and cause them to vibrate.

The oldest violin is dated back to 1564. It was
named Charles IX, which Andrea Amati created.
The violin is hard to date back when it was
invented because many historians see that
various thins resemble a violin in different
countries. The violin has changed overtime. In
the baroque era, the violin had a neck whose
surface was almost completely in line with the
ribs. The fingerboard was compose of a wedge
that lifted the strings much higher. the modern
form of the violin is a lower cleft in the design
of the fingerboard, which provides a straight
plank of ebony.

Sound is made on a violin by dragging a
bow across the strings, which vibrates,
making the vibration travel through the
bridge into the top plate. The violin is
the smallest in its family, but produces
the highest sound.
