As a young child, my parents read to me daily. Both my grandparents immigrated to Canada in their late teens. My dad's parents had not received any education and to this day, my nonna (grandmother) is unable to read or write. As a result of this, both my mother and father stressed the importance of education.

My parents read to me every single day. To this day, I can still remember my mum reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," among other books to me. Whilst I remember these moments with my mum fondly, the moments with my dad reading to me stand out a little more. I can remember my dad and I reading "Love You Forever" over and over again. I remember sitting on his lap and him singing and reading to me. As I got older, I began being able to read and sing along with him. This cultivated my love for reading.

As I grew older, I became a little sassier. As I became sassier, my taste in books did too! I loved, loved, loved Junie B. Jones books. I was forever reading them! Every time a school book order came out I ordered every single one I possibly could. I saved my pennies and spent them all on books - I was obsessed with reading! As a result of my love of reading I was reading books above grade level and excelling in my classes.

Travel has always been a big component of my life. I have been extremely fortunate to have travelled to so many beautiful places with my family. These family trips have expanded my cultural literacy and overall literacy skills. As a result of these trips, I have expanded my knowledge of various cultures and beliefs which will help me greatly as a future teacher. I want my students to feel like they can explore different cultures and travel the world through books and stories. I hope to create a sense of cultural literacy in my classroom. I want my students to become global citizens.

Continuing along with the theme of travel, I loved "Magic Treehouse" books. I liked however long I spent reading I was able to escape to a new place and go on a new adventure! I love how books have the ability to take us out of our everyday lives and allow us to escape to a place where nothing else matters. This is the kind of love and passion I want to create for my students. I want to create a sense of escape for my students. I want them to see reading as a way to escape their everyday life for a brief period of time and explore something new and out of the ordinary.
