Christopher Columbus was an explorer who lived hundreds of years ago. In fact, he was born in 1451! That's quite a long time ago!

Our explorer was in Spain when he came up with an idea. He wondered if there was an easier way to go to Asia, so he went to Spanish Royals to see if he could be given permission to adventure towards the West.

In January 1492, Columbus was given permission to travel to the West in order to find Asia from Isabella and Ferdinand, the King and Queen of Spain.

Finally the time had come! August of the very same year, Columbus set sail on the Santa Maria. His adventure across the Atlantic Ocean had begun!

After 36 long days, Columbus and his men landed on an island that is now known as the Bahamas. They claimed it for Spain the moment their feet hit the soil.

When the explorers went to explore the new land, they met some of the natives, the Tianos. They seem skeptical as to who these new people were, but they did welcome them.
