Once upon a time there was a boy named Joe who worked on a farm with his father, John.

2
Joe's favorite things he did on the farm were to milk the cows and pick cotton.

3
Life revolved around farming at that time which was good for Joe and John because that was all they knew how to do. They never got a chance to go to school and learn.

4
However, time went on and people began to invent machines like the steam engine that made work easier and faster for everyone. The steam engine also led to other important inventions like streetcars and subways.

5
As this happened, more jobs became available, but working with machines in factories meant that people had to be able to read directions. Most farmers and people of the lower class could not read because they never went to school.

6
This is why John had to go to school to get a job in a factory.
