Historians think that people like my family came to Alaska on the Bering Strait

During modern Alaska gold was discovered in 1880 and in 1912 Alaska became a territory. In 1923, the Alaska railroad was completed and oil was discovered at Swanson River in 1957. Nowadays, tourism is a major industry in Alaska and today the population of Alaska is 736,000.

Natives like my family stayed on the land during this transition.

Waqaa (hello again in my native language of Yup'ik.) Now that you know about the geography and history of Alaska, it is time to learn more about the native tribes that live there. There are five major ones. My family is Yup'ik and lives on the southwest portion of Alaska.

10
Eskimo or Inuit?
The word Eskimo is commonly used in Alaska to refer to all Inuits, which is one of the main native groups in Alaska. The Eskimos are indigenous people inhabiting northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Eastern Siberia. They speak two main languages Inuit and Yup'ik.

To the left is an Eskimo and to the right is an Inuit. I am an Inuit.
11
Inuit origins in Canada which dates back at least 4,000 years.
There culture is deeply rooted in the vast land they inhabit.
The Inuit closely observe the climate, landscapes, seascapes, and ecological systems of their home.
Chena's Culture: The Culture of the Inuit

12
Inuit's treat human beings, the lands, animals, and plants with respect. They use the resources of the land and sea wisely to preserve for the future. Family is the center of the Inuit culture and co-operation and sharing is the basic principles in their society. They share the food they have hunted with everyone.

My father always says it is important to only catch the amount of fish you will eat, nature is not to be abused.
13
Inuit culture has been exposed to many social influences over the past century. They have managed and preserve their culture and values during this technological revolution.
Inukitut is spoken in all Inuit communities. This is the principle language is used in radio and television productions, and it is implemented in the school. However, they can be fluent in English as well.

14
Inuit communities practice traditional Inuit dance and song. These are the drum dance and throat singing.
Throat singing was a from of entertainment among the women while the Inuit men went hunting. Throat singing is called katajjaq, pirkusirtuk or nipanguhiit, it was regarded as a vocal breathing game
Inuit drum dancing played a part in many special occasions such as births, marriages an Inuit boy's first hunt.

15
Oral history and story telling are still part pf the Inuit culture.
There are a continuing source of inspiration for Inuit artist whose prints and sculptures are prized by collectors.
In the 20th century family values, cultures and traditions continues in the Inuit culture.

Oral tradition is when a story is passed down from generation to generation without writing it down.
