Count Metternich was the statesman of the Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph I and Giselle was a noble woman from Savudrija.
They met in Vienna at the ball organized at the Emperor's court. The Count noticed a beautiful young lady with long black hair.
He approached her, introduced himself and started a conversation. They fell in love.
The Count had plans to visit her in Savudrija and build a lighthouse there.

After telling his plans to the Emperor, the Count hired a famous Italian architect, Pietro Nobilo to design and supervise the construction of the lighthouse.
In March 1817, Metternich sailed from Italy to Savudrija. The sea was rough, but he wasn't afraid.
In Savudrija they were greeted by a lot of Savudrian residents. However, he was looking for Giselle. He saw her in the crowd and ran towards her to greet her.

The following morning, in March 1817, the construction of the lighthouse began. Count Metternich was supervising it all the time.
The lighthouse was being built fast. Only the local stone extracted from the Savudrian coast was used for its construction. In the night of 17th April 1818, after a bit more than a year, the lighthouse emitted its first light.
This ceremony was attended by the Emperor Francis I himself. But not all made it to the opening...
