Esmerelda is a giraffe. She lives in Africa with her father, mother, brother, grandpa, and grandma.

Emerelda never has to look very far for food. Her neck is very long, so she can always reach the highest branches where no one else can reach.
Plus, her tongue is so long and tough, she can eat the leaves from the Acacia tree, and not be bothered with the long, sharp thorns.

Sometimes, Esmerelda plays hide and seek with her girl friends. When she hides, no one can ever find her because her coat is spotted and blends in with the bushes and trees.

She does not play with her brother and his friends that much because they do not always play nicely. They hit each other with their necks and horns. These tufted horns are called ossicones. Her father says they are rough because they are practicing for when they grow up and have to protect their families from danger.
