George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1732

In 1743, George's father dies when he is only 11 years old. Luckily, his older brother Lawrence helped raise him.

When George was 16 he worked as a surveyor. He took measurements of the new lands, mapping them out in great detail.

A few years later, George became a leader with the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War.

Following the French and Indian War, George settled down and married Martha Dandridge Custis. They moved into the estate at Mount Vernon after his brother Lawrence died.

In May of 1775, before the Revolutionary War began, George was appointed as General of the Continental Army.
