Fetal Alcohol Syndrome happens when a mother drinks a lot of alcohol during her pregnancy. This disability is not hereditary and doesn't pass down like a gene. So it isn't something that just run's in the family.

How did this happen?
While the baby is still in your stomach it is receiving all of its nutrients from your blood stream. When you have alcohol in your blood it can passes through the placenta and into the baby's blood. Since alcohol is toxic substance it can poison your baby while its still developing.

It is unknown the amount of alcohol it takes to poison the baby, some women may have only had a few drinks and gave there babies the disease. But in most instances it is seen in women who binge drank while pregnant.

The damage done to your baby depends on which developing stage the baby is in. This disability could be prevented by not dinking when pregnant and also eating healthy.

This is 100% preventable by NOT DRINKING. Eat healthier food and get lots of rest.

The disability of your child can not be diagnosed before your baby is born, the health of the baby and you can be assess throughout your pregnancy. The doctor can watch for signs and symptoms in the initial weeks, months, and years of the child's life.

One of the most common ways doctors identify Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is looking for unusual facial features. The head of someone with FAS will be much smaller than normal. Their nasal bridge, bony part of your nose, will be much lower, they will also have a flatter chin because it is undeveloped. The eye opening will be very small and the mid area of there face will flatter.
