In a broken kingdom divided my war, sickness and blame there was a man named Connor and a woman named Emma. Connor lived in a town called North castle, while Emma lived in a town called South Castle. It was forbidden for anyone from the two towns to be together, because the two towns were pitted against each other ever since the realm had been divided. Each Castle blamed the other for the toxic fog that had set across the land many years ago. The fog destroyed anything it touched and only those who were experienced in trade routes were capable of navigating the forest connecting the Kingdoms. For this reason only those traders were permitted to cross the boarders.

Connor was a Prince in North Castle and longed to be free from his duties. One day he stole away on a trade caravan and escaped the castle in the early morning. The sun was still peeking out above the trees and the sky was a strange pink color, the forest fog twinkled in the rising sun. It was an ominous ocean tempting intruders to enter.

This same day Emma realized that her father was too ill to make his trade route. Her family had been traders for years and while she was still learning the route she wasted no time in preparing her caravan and stealing away from South Castle. She entered the forest in her coverings and under the guise that she was her father determined to make the daily checkpoint.

It was on this day that Connor and Emma met. The checkpoint was a tavern called “The Laughing Man” and anyone outside at night sought shelter here for the way. Emma sat with her log book keeping to herself until a sudden commotion burst through the door.
6
“We got ourselves a stow away men!” a trader shouted and tossed a man to the ground. His hand had horrible burns and he winced when he hit the ground. “Not good,” thought Emma, and she would have ignored the situation rather than gotten involved if it weren’t for what happened next. “What should we do with him Ruben?” Ruben the bar keep looked around, “I don’t want a mess if that’s what you’re getting at.”

“Right then out into the fog with you then!” the trader hoisted Connor off the ground and prepared to throw him into the fog’s open jaws. “Stop!” before Emma even realized she was on her feet blockading the door.
9
“Move boy,” shouted the trader, but Emma held her ground firm. “I offer a trade for the stowaway, I need an extra hand on my caravan and a stowaway with no recourse is cheaper than any of you I’d reckon. What will you have for him?” Emma’s heart was in her throat, she herself could not be in the forest without her father.
10
To Emma’s relief the man loosened his grip. “What do you carry boy?” Emma smiled “that was not the question, what will you have for him?” She asked hoping not to sound too eager.
The trader shifted feet and squinted his face in thought, “fine silk, a pint of salves, and three cloaks.”
Emma shot back, “no silk, a jar of salve, and one cloak”
The trader pushed Connor to the floor again, “make it 2 cloaks and his yours.” Emma nodded and gestured for Rueben to make the arrangements before lending Connor a hand.
11
“You hit the fog?” Emma asked while fixing Connors hand with a salve. He nodded “when they discovered me I tried to run.” “You would have been better off with a beating” said Emma.
