Once upon a time there was a young girl named Eleanor who lived in New York. She had a beautiful mother and a very popular father, but Eleanor never quite felt like she fit in. In fact, some people used to call her mean names like "granny" and "ugly duckling".

When Eleanor was only seven years old her father became addicted to alcohol and very violent. Later that year he was put into a hospital for insane people. Also her little brother, Elliot, was born.

One year later Eleanor's mother died from a disease called diphtheria. After her mother's death her grandmother, Mary Hall, got custody of Eleanor and Elliot. Eleanor couldn't help but feel like her mother's death was somehow her fault.

When Eleanor went to live with her grandmother she attended a boarding school in England called Allenswood. While she went to school she began to discover herself. For once she finally felt like she fit in.

While Eleanor went to school in England she had a very influential mentor named Mademoiselle Souvestre. They traveled to France and Italy. Mean while, back in America President McKinley was killed.

When President McKinley died Eleanor's uncle, Theodore Roosevelt, became president. Eleanor and Her uncle had always been really close. When she was with him she felt like she was safe from the troubles of the world.
