Lacy the ladybug loves adventure! She is really small so she can see things that most people can’t. Today she is going to follow an antigen and see how it affects a human body!

2
People have skin that functions as a non-specific defense mechanism. This means that it prevents harmful things from entering the body. Skin also maintains body temperature and allows humans to feel sensations such as heat and cold.

3
Another non-specific defense is nose hair! Lacy the ladybug crawls up near the nose and sees how it traps dust and foreign particles from entering the body.

4

Lacy the Ladybug goes up through the nose and into the body. But before she reaches the lungs, she finds a lot of mucus lining the entrance to them! The mucus shields the lungs from different intruders including bacteria which is bad for the body.

5
If an antigen can get through this and into the body like Lacy the ladybug, then there is another source of non-specific defense! This is inflammation. A part of the body becomes red and swollen and it hurts! But this lets tissue repair itself.
