Christopher Columbus was an explorer, navigator, colonizer, and a citizen of the Republic of Genoa which is now part of Italy. He was born on October 31 1451 AD, in a middle-class family. He had 3 brothers named Bartolomeo, Giovanni Pellegrino, Giacomo and a sister, Bianchinetta. His father, Domenico Columbo was a wool weaver and mother was Susanna Fontanarossa.

After several years of his job, he was later given the opportunity to sail in the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, while traveling to England, his ship had started to sink. Columbus luckily managed to find Lisbon while swimming for shore. There he found his brother, Bartholomew.

Columbus had learned many important facts about the world and had made several maps that also identified that the earth was round. After a year of helping Bartholomew with a map he was making for his company, he set sail to Northern Atlantic.

He later heard rumor of a land to the west that the Vikings had already discovered. He had also heard of a land that took a route to Asia that would make men rich beyond their dreams and since Columbus was an explorer this would be easy. It was decided, he would get to Asia by sailing west. Now all he needed was a country that would sponsor him. For years Columbus had tried to convince European rulers to pay for a voyage of exploration. Then, in 1492 the Spanish monarchs had defeated the Muslims in Spain and were now able to pay for voyages seeking new trade routes. Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain agreed to support him.

Columbus then set sail to west from Spain with 3 of his ships. Santa Maria, which was the largest, the Nina which was bore with a female saint’s name; Santa Clara, and Pinta which was the fastest. The ships had an upper deck which sailors slept and cooked their meals, a hold where food and fresh water was kept, a captain’s cabin that had dining room, bedroom, and study which Columbus stayed on Santa Maria, and a crow’s nest which served as a platform for a lookout.

Columbus shared to his crew the riches they would discover on their journey. The crew was excited as they sailed but became anxious a day after. Many weeks past without any sight of land, just miles of the big blue ocean. This frighted the sailors and they begged for Columbus to sail the ships back to Europe. Columbus refused to believe that this was true and forced the crew to keep sailing. They grumbled and got restless, but they all knew that without Christopher and other officers, they would have a very limited idea on how to navigate back home. So they simply followed orders.
