About 65 years ago, a woman named Henrietta Lacks went to the doctor because her stomach was hurting her. When the doctors were helping her to make her feel better, they looked at her cells with their machines.

This is what scientists see when they look at our cells in a microscope!

A cell is what makes up everyone’s bodies, even mine and yours. Our human bodies have trillions of cells. They make up our skin, fingernails, blood and pretty much everything else!

When our cells are on our body, they multiply. That means that one cell splits into two cells, two cells split into four cells and after a while, we have trillions!

Cells usually stop multiplying (turning into more) when they are taken from our bodies, so they die and stop working. But, Mrs.Lacks' cells were special, hers didn't die when doctors took them.

This means that doctors have a whole bunch of cells that were not on a real live person. So, they could do all kinds of crazy tests on them without hurting anyone! What could they do with them?
