King John was born in 1166 and was the King of England from 1199 to his death in 1216. He became king after his brother died, although he was not expected to inherit the throne.

While he was king, he made an agreement with Philip II to give recognition to the lands John possessed. Also in 1209, Pope Innocent III excommunicated him

After being excommunicated, he confiscated church property snd sold it. He used this money to create the English Navy. Many people were unhappy with King John at this time.

His barons were especially unhappy with him and cruel policies and treatment of nobles. John was also trying to control the Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langston.

Langston tried to create a peace proposal, which was called the Magna Carta. This agreement promised the safety of churches and protection for the barons.

John saw the Magna Carta as a bargaining chip. The Magna Carta lasted less than 3 months. The end of the Magna Carta led to the First Baron's War.

The barons were led by Louis, which was a problem to John. John's fleet disappeared and then retreated. John died of a disease and his son was named king and the Magna Carta was reissued.
